Back Country Horsemen – Gila Chapter

The GBCH have s been working on the trails in the Gila National Forest for more than a decade and have special expertise in trail work. Many members are  crosscut and chain saw saw and have extensive horse packing experience.   They have kept hundreds of miles of trail open throughout the years

New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors

Established in 1982, NMVFO is an all-volunteer, action oriented, non-political, nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization that promotes public involvement and education of the public in the maintenance, improvement, and stewardship of New Mexico’s trails. They work all over the state on both federal and state and city public spaces.  They have completed several trails projects in the Gila Wilderness in the past.

National Outdoor Leadership School (Nols)

NOLS is a leader in outdoor education and leads backpacking trips in the Gila Wilderness in the spring and fall. They operate a special program in the spring that is a Service Learning Trip.  The group has met up with  us at remote areas of the Wilderness to work on hard to reach trails.

New Mexico Wild 
The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is dedicated to the protection, restoration, and continued enjoyment of New Mexico’s wildlands and wilderness areas.New Mexico Wild has worked for several years to secure a Wild and Scenic designation for the Gila and San Francisco rivers and several of their main tributaries. On May 12, 2020 we got one step closer as Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced that they have introduced legislation that would designate 446 miles of the Gila and San Francisco as Wild and Scenic. The M.H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild and Scenic Rivers Act is aptly named after the late, legendary defender of a wild Gila River.

Continental Divide Trail Coalition

“The CDTC was founded in 2012 by volunteers and recreationists hoping to provide a unified voice for the Trail. Today, CDTC is a robust 501(c)3 organization that works hand-in-hand with the U.S. Forest Service and other federal land management agencies to build a strong community of supporters who want to see the CDT protected not just for today’s users, but for generations to come”

Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance

Their mission is “coordinating user groups to preserve and enhance trail and outdoor recreation opportunities in Southern New Mexico, West Texas and borderland region”  Their vision is “Connecting communities through trails and the outdoors.”  We partner with them on trails that are in-between Las Cruces and Silver City.
