At Heart of the Gila we promise to use your money wisely!
Our 501c3 non-profit has a volunteer Director so our overhead and administrative costs are low. When you donate to Heart of the Gila, we put your money to work on the ground-educating, stewarding and protecting the public lands of the Southwest.
Check out some of what we have been up to, and what lies ahead in 2024.

Habitat Restoration and Endangered Species Education at Silva Creek Botanical Garden in Silver City-our in-town learning space.  The Children’s Butterfly Garden was planted in 2015, in honor of Ella, Ella, and Michael. Today the space is in the process of expansion as we create a larger and and accessible butterfly to hold more plants and allow more learning inside of it’s wings.  We hold our Monarch tagging workshops and Endangered Species Education for elementary students at this precious space.

Your donations also fund our Outdoor Equity Watershed Education Programs
In the past 5 years, we have focused on creating broader and more equitable access to outdoor programming throughout our region. We have provided immersive and joyful experiences for hundreds of children (and adults), throughout the Gila Watershed.Feel free to help us do more!

Advocacy for the Wild Places of the Southwest!
In 2024, the Air Force will be publishing it’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement to lower the level of supersonic flight over the Gila and the Southwest to 5,000 feet. We will be participating in an all-hands-on deck effort to fight back this proposal just as we did with the F-16 fighter jet pilot plan.  Get on board with us!
Learn more about the proposal here:
AZ-SUA-Gila-Apache Forests Impacts-Fact sheet
Other advocacy activities include  reporting illegal logging and grazing activities in the forest, membership in the Peaceful Gila Skies coalition, and campaigning for
Wild and Scenic Designation for the Gila River.

There are always new environmental challenges and all our advocacy activities are funded strictly through your donations.  Thank you!

Stewarding Public Lands. Our volunteer opportunities range from trail maintenance, to removal of non-native plants, to front country maintenance cleaning up campgrounds and interacting with visitors.  Next year, Heart of the Gila will be participating in the Gila Wilderness Centennial Celebration by fanning out across the Gila talking with visitors about Wilderness ethics and providing on-the-spot environmental education opportunities and natural history walks across  Wilderness. We hope to see you out there.  Thank you for helping us protect the wild lands of the Southwest, and thank you all you do!  We appreciate you!
